Gaynell Arnette Melton

July 21, 1928 ~ December 8, 2018 (age 90)

Gaynell Arnette Melton, 90, went to be with the Lord on Saturday December 8, 2018. She was born in Robeson County, daughter of the late Benjamin and Fannie Arnette. She was raised in Fairmont, NC. She graduated from St. Andrews with a BS in Education. She married Boyce Melton in 1950. They moved to Salisbury where she began her 35 years career as a teacher. She later came to Belmont, teaching at the old East Belmont School and later Page Elementary. She was invited and inducted into the Delta Kappa Gamma Teaching Sorority.  She was recognized as being an outstanding and distinguished personality of the South in 1969 for being one of the nation’s best first grade teachers by Teacher Magazine. Gaynell was an active member of First Baptist Church in Belmont having served as leader of the WMU, teacher of youth activities, and served on mission trips with the youth.  She later went to South Point Baptist where she is currently a member. She loved to meet weekly with her friends for years to play Canasta. Mrs. Melton loved to make ceramics and crafts and also was a wonderful seamstress. She spent many hours volunteering in Gastonia at the hospital. Gaynell was known for making wonderful pound cake to share with friends and family in their times of need. Her life was a true example of a good and faithful servant. It was exemplified through her classroom teaching
and her every day walk. She will always be known for her ability to lead, guide and direct through a profound passive, soft spoken demeanor which was able to control many a classroom and any audience
throughout her life.  Students over years have returned to comment what a wonderful example she was to them and the impact she had at the beginning of their school career. She will be missed from all walk of life because she indeed touched all that she met.  In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband Boyce Melton, her brother Van Buren Arnette and son in law Ed Ealey.

She is survived by her children Benny F. Melton and wife Pat of Gastonia, Lynn Ealey of Mount Holly, grandchildren Fletcher Melton of Concord, Macie Melton of Concord, Hunter Ealey of Mount Holly, Morgan Ealey of Mount Holly, Stephen Hungate of Lookout Mountain, Georgia, and Michael Hungate of Cornelius, a sister Grace Smith of Fairmont, NC and numerous nieces and nephews.

A service to celebrate the life of Mrs. Melton will be held 2:00pm Sunday December 16, 2018 at First Baptist Church in Mount Holly with Dr. Kendell Cameron and Rev. Bill Abrams officiating. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service at the church. Interment will follow at Greenwood Cemetery in Belmont.
