Mary Jane Bowman Canute passed away peacefully on December 16, 2018. Mary was born to the late John and Anna Bowman on January 24, 1932, in Wayne County, Michigan. She was predeceased by her beloved husband, Albert J. Canute, an infant daughter, and three brothers and one sister.
Mary graduated from Roseville High School in 1950. She married Al on June 6, 1953. Mary lived all of her adult life in Berkley, Michigan, with her husband Al and her three children, Denise, Greg and Scott. She worked as an office manager for Belmont Paper and Bag in Detroit from 1972 – 1991. Mary was deeply committed and involved with the International Order of Foresters, holding a number of national positions within the organization. As a family, she spent many years camping with friends in the Robin Hood Rovers Camping Club. She was a member of Ascension of Christ Lutheran Church in Beverly Hills, Michigan.
Mary is survived by her daughter Denise Canute Riley and husband Craig Riley of Easley, South Carolina; and sons Greg Canute and wife Beth of Mount Holly, North Carolina; and Scott Canute and wife Barbara of Berkley, Michigan. She is also survived by six grandchildren – Kristin Riley Bane and husband Lee of Winder, Georgia; Tim Riley and wife Marina of Easley, South Carolina; Rebecca Riley Dexter and husband Billy of Cary, North Carolina; Kelly Canute of Murfreesboro, Tennessee; Jessica Canute of Berkley, Michigan, and Jack Canute of Berkley, Michigan. Mary was blessed to have five great grandchildren – Isabella Bane, Logan Bane, Owen Riley, Andrew Riley, and Lila Dexter.
A memorial service to celebrate her life will be held in March in Michigan. The family will be assisted by Wm. Sullivan and Son Funeral Homes in Royal Oak, Michigan, for the memorial service and burial.
