Sarah Williams Griffin Mauney, 73 went home to heaven on September 20, 2018 after an 11-year journey with dementia. A Mint Hill, NC native, Sarah spent many years at Wilson Grove Baptist Church, where her whole family attended. During her childhood, she spent evenings gathered around a fireplace with her mother, father and sisters, while they read the Bible and sang gospel songs. Sarah accepted a personal relationship with Jesus when she was 10-years-old. A devout Christian, she was very active in church and sang in her church choir for many years. Her first job was as a school bus driver for Mecklenburg County when she was in the 10th grade. Sarah’s dream was to become a missionary nurse but life took a different path. She retired from a career at BellSouth after 30 years, and was delighted to become a Grammie a year later.
A 1963 graduate of East Mecklenburg High School, Sarah was the daughter of Herman and Vera Williams and the middle child of three sisters. She is preceded in death by her father and mother, step-father Dewey Kimrey, sister Ruth Williams Winn, husband, Vance Mauney, and her first grandson, BJ Correll. Sarah is survived by her daughter Michelle Griffin Love of Denver, NC, son Steven R. Mauney (Betsy) of Charlotte, NC, and sister Martha Newell (Carl) of Loganville, GA. She is also survived by five grandchildren, Carly Correll of Denver, NC; Isaac Mauney, Elise Mauney, Grace Mauney and Cole Mauney, of Charlotte, NC.
A graveside service took place on Wednesday, September 26, 2018 at Sunset Memory Gardens, Mint Hill, NC.
