As a hobby Billy (Billy Sol #64) drove drag cars early on and then switched to dirt track racing at local tracks in the Charlotte and surrounding areas in the 70s and 80s. He drove Chevrolets and Fords sponsored by Bill Hough (Hough Texaco Service Station of Charlotte) in the semi-modified division. Dirt track fans can remember the announcer calling out “Billy Sol hit the wall” as he frequently hung the car to far out in the red bank turns. In the 90s his son Zane partnered with him to race team cars. Billy certainly had racing fuel running through his veins.
He was a member of The Lutheran Church of The Good Shepherd in Mt. Holly, NC. Went on several mission trips to Mexico and to New Orleans.
