Obituary

Joshua Leland Cox, 41, was born on a summer evening in August in Gaston County, NC to Charlie Cox, Jr. (Buzzy) and Sonya (Mattox) Cox Cowan. Josh was preceded in death by his beloved grandparents Charlie Sr. and Vertie (Loftin) Cox, Betty (Miller) and J.L. Garrett, Horace Dean Williams. Josh was the stepson of the late Barry Cowan, Sr.

Joshua was the proud big brother of a sister Sarah Cox and a brother Barry “Bailey” Cowan, Jr.

The light of Joshua’s world were his three daughters, Hayley and twins Katelyn and Lauren.

Josh was the adored nephew of many aunts and uncles in North Carolina, Georgia and Florida. He grew up with 10 cousins, many who were like brothers and sisters to him. Josh was a loving and doting uncle to his niece Winter.

Josh grew up in the Lucia-Riverbend area of Mount Holly, playing in the barns and woods of the Cox Family farm on the Mountain Island Lake.

Growing up, Josh played soccer and baseball. Josh lettered in wrestling at Mount Holly Junior High. Josh’s claim to fame was his ability to barefoot ski and his personal record of slalom skiing behind the family boat at 35mph.

Josh was an avid fisherman and could often be found on the banks of the Catawba River where he learned to fish with his beloved “Maw” and “Paw”. He spent many days and nights fishing with his lifelong friends from Mount Holly.

As a boy, Josh was happiest playing with dirt movers and Tonka trucks on the sandy beaches of the lake. Josh grew up to be a skilled Heavy Equipment operator becoming proficient in operating nearly any piece grading equipment over the past 22 years. Josh worked on numerous road construction projects across Charlotte and North and South Carolina.

Josh was known for his unique sense of humor and his beautiful smile. He was a compassionate soul that often took in friends when they didn’t have a home. Josh was a true dog lover. He rescued several dogs over the years and left behind his last two rescues, Scratchy and Diamond.

In lieu of flowers, a college fund for his daughters has been set up through Bank of America.

A memorial of life ceremony will be planned for this summer.

The family is eternally grateful for the diligent work of Charlotte Mecklenburg Police Department.
